Melanie is the General Manager for Closure Strategy and Optimisation within Rio Tinto. Founded in 1873, Rio Tinto is the world’s second largest metals and mining corporation producing iron ore, aluminium, copper, Borates, titanium and diamonds.

In her role at Rio Tinto, Melanie is responsible for influencing the global asset portfolio to reduce closure risk and future cost over the LoA through closure in design and operating for closure. Melanie also has accountability for Rio’s Global Closure R&D program and for leading the Group’s work on repurposing of assets in partnership with Governments and communities to deliver a positive social legacy.

Prior to joining Rio Tinto, Melanie was the global head of Safety, Environment and Social Performance with MMG Ltd. Prior to this, she led the SHEC function within the Minerals Council of Australia and held senior roles in the Federal Parliamentary staff.

In her role as the MCA Director – Health, Safety, Environment and Community Policy, Melanie was responsible for the development of Enduring Value – the Australian Minerals Industry Framework for Sustainable Development. 

Melanie was recognised as one of the inaugural 100 Australian Women of Influence for her contribution to public policy, including on Indigenous economic development and mining.
